NHL Chooses BVDM to Preserve Hockey Archive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

National Hockey League and Broadway Video Digital Media Address Hockey Archives

New York, NY, June 18, 2010 – Broadway Video Digital Media (BVDM), a leading digital media facility based in Manhattan’s Times Square, announced today that it has begun work on a project for the National Hockey League (NHL). The NHL’s massive archive is the largest repository for U.S. professional hockey history, and the NHL in concert with BVDM has moved to preserve this vital asset.

Working with over 30,000 master tapes from the NHL’s archive, BVDM is digitally preserving and organizing the tapes, creating and sculpting metadata, and delivering the content to online distribution platforms like hulu, MySpace, and iTunes. As an Apple-certified encoding partner for the iTunes TV and Film Stores, BVDM offers the NHL a worry-free and smooth launch for their content.

Dirk Van Dall, CTO of BVDM, expressing his satisfaction about working with the NHL, said, “The NHL is exactly the type of company where we can do the most good because our encoding process delivers three files simultaneously: a lossless format for archiving, a format for broadcast and distribution, and a proxy for easy screening.” Mark Yates, BVDM’s President, added, “We are able to address three challenges at once that haunt all content owners, and do it for an outstanding value.”

With the NHL’s archive being systematically encoded, hockey fans around the world should expect to see more hockey available on more online platforms, but especially on the NHL’s flagship website www.NHL.com.
